How to create a 'Safety Profile' and enroll in “Smart911” to protect you, your loved ones, and other members of your household, even your pets!
At a time when you may be panicked, or unable to communicate, this "enhanced" 9-1-1 ensures that the vital details needed by Emergency Medical Staff (EMS), police and fire are immediately available.
Creating your Safety Profile on-line with “Smart911” during a calm moment, ensures that the information is correct and accurate; exactly what you would like to communicate to emergency response teams in an emergency.
What details are important in a medical emergency or traffic accident?
__ Your location! “Smart911’ provides access to the GPS on your phone. At home, or on the road, emergency Medical Staff (EMS) can LOCATE you!
__ Medical history
__ Blood Type
__ Emergency Contacts
__ Your ‘preferred providers’
In a home fire, for example, EMS could look for and rescue pets that are registered on your Smart911 profile!
How Does Smart911 Work?
Anytime you make an emergency 9-1-1 call from a phone registered with your Safety Profile, the 9-1-1 system recognizes your phone number and automatically displays your profile on the screen of the call taker who receives your call.
Where is Smart911 available?
Enter your Zip code on their website. Although Smart911 is a nationwide service, it is not available in every municipality yet. Automated delivery of a Safety Profile to local law enforcement, medical and fire responders is dependent on local public safety agencies installing the Smart911 technology.
Even if the service is not yet available in your home or work jurisdiction, you are encouraged to create a Smart911 profile, since you may travel into an area that has enabled Smart911.
How do I update my information?
You can update your Smart911 Safety Profile content at any time by logging into your Smart911 account and clicking on settings. Update every 6 months even if no information has changed. 9-1-1 call takers need to be assured that the information they are viewing during your call is accurate within the past 6 months.
How much does “Smart911” cost?
Multiple language options are available on their website.
NOTE: I make this suggestion from, unfortunately, personal experience. Several years ago, while out of town visiting a friend, I had an unexpected medical issue. She was able to ask directions to an urgent care location and provide transportation. After reviewing my medical episode, urgent care called 9-1-1 to their facility, and I was subsequently transported in an ambulance to a local hospital. That was my ‘wake up call.’
What if my friend wasn’t with me? What if I had been on the freeway? Even if I could proceed to an off ramp, how would I find urgent medical help? Having “Smart911” gives me the security that my cell phone’s GPS will bring help when and where I need it … and the EMS will have instant access to my medical records to quickly provide the assistance I need, whether or not I am able to respond.
