Bellevue College cautiously expanding in-person classes during covid19's delta strain.

The Bellevue Zone communicated with Nicole Beattie, Associate Director of Communications (she/her/hers) from Bellevue College's Office of Institutional Advancement.  We learned how Bellevue College is doing during the covid19 pandemic.

Below are Beattie's answers to our questions.

TBZ:  What is the percentage or count of students in the classroom; has there been a big drop in classroom attendance due to covid?  Are students taking courses virtually still? What are the numbers like with students in-class vs. virtually?

NB:  Most summer classes remain remote, while Fall Quarter includes a mix of on campus and online options. In Fall Quarter 30% of our classes are scheduled to occur fully or partly in person.

In terms of enrollment, BC has fared better than many other Washington state colleges. For example, last fall some colleges saw enrollment declines from 14-16%, while BC’s enrollment dropped 4%, primarily due to fewer new international students enrolling.

TBZ:  Have there been class closures due to covid? If so, are any closed courses expected to open up this year?

NB:   We’ve been gradually adding more in-person classes where the learning experience is more challenging in the remote environment, like nursing or science classes that require labs. For fall, we will also be adding more classes to that mix. However, we’re also carefully watching developments, particularly with the rise of the delta strain, and will adjust if needed. Safety is our highest priority.

TBZ:  Has covid affected student tuition, available services now or in the past 18 months during covid?

NB:   Tuition is decided at the state level, but thanks to the CARES act we were able to provide students who were impacted by COVID with extra funds and plan to do the same with Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF) for fall and winter quarter. All student support services have continued to be provided, just remotely by phone or Teams and Zoom.

TBZ:  Have there been any covid deaths of students/employees at Bellevue College that you know of?

NB:  Fortunately, we are not aware of any COVID-related deaths, and hope that remains the case.
